Death Valley National Park is a vast, wild landscape of desert and rugged mountains. Every year, half a million visitors make the steep drive up to Dantes View to get a unique view of Badwater Basin and beyond. The spectacular vista from over 5,000 feet above Death Valley encompasses a sweep of over 30 miles across some of the most dramatic scenery in Death Valley.
Over time, the viewing area had become severely degraded and needed a thorough restoration. Partnering with the National Park Service and the Death Valley Natural History Association, The Fund for People in Parks provided a major grant of private support to help fund construction at the site. Construction was completed in May 2018, including an extended viewing area, low barrier wall, new educational signs, and benches. The Fund also provided an extra enhancement to the visitor experience at the site: a bronze relief map of Badwater Basin. Project Cost: $559,490 Project Completed: 2018 The Fund for People in Parks: $232,421 National Park Service: $327,069 This was a tremendous opportunity for the National Park Service to work with partners on a project that was desperately needed and likely would have taken many years to accomplish otherwise." |
The view from this area was my favorite thing in Death Valley National Park. You have an expansive view up the valley and across to the mountains on the other side, and you are looking down on the lowest place in the U.S. just below you. There are benches to sit and enjoy the view and a couple information plaques."
