Crater Lake National Park preserves a crystalline lake inside a 2,148-foot-deep caldera that formed 8,000 years ago after the collapse of a massive volcano.
250,000 visitors per year enter the park via the northern entrance, and their first glimpse of the lake is at the stunning location known as North Junction. The overlook there is in dire need of an overhaul to stabilize eroding slopes, formalize trails, and increase accessibility for those with mobility challenges. A large-scale rehabilitation will take place in 2023. The Fund for People in Parks has provided a grant for sculptor Bridget Keimel to create and install a bronze relief map to create a margin of excellence at the site. The scope of the park and the depth of the lake can be hard for visitors to comprehend, and a bronze tactile map will greatly enhance understanding, especially for kinesthetic learners and people with visual impairments. Bridget has created sculptures for numerous National Parks, including two Fund projects: Dantes View at Death Valley and Mather Overlook at Great Basin. The sculpture was cast in bronze in Fall 2022 and transported to the park for installation in Summer 2024. Project Cost: $69,922 Project Begun: 2020 |
