San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is home to over 100 historically significant vessels and a world-class collection of Pacific maritime artifacts and documents. Millions of visitors enjoy the park’s ships and exhibits at Hyde Street Pier annually.
The 1895 C.A. Thayer is a three-mast gaff-rigged schooner that delivered lumber and other cargo in the Pacific region into the early 20th century. The 216-foot ship is a National Historic Landmark that has been undergoing a full restoration over a dozen years. (Previous Fund grants provided the sails and documented the restoration in a widely-acclaimed film). Reconstruction of the captain’s quarters is a distinct milestone in bringing the ship back to its original condition. This deck structure is one of the most “relatable” features for the general visitor because it contains the captain and mates’ cabins, a salon, and a head (restroom). The Fund for People in Parks provided a grant to purchase supplies to finish reconstructing the doors, windows, and interior spaces. The park was able to acquire redwood salvage logs that are believed to have been felled within the first two decades after the vessel's construction (the 1910s). The park's talented shipwrights were able to use this reclaimed wood to restore custom moldings and traditional cut nails and fastenings. The project was completed in Summer 2022. Project Cost: $7,500 Project Completed: 2022 The park is grateful for the funding to move forward with this project. I think you'll agree; it looks beautiful." |
