San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is home to over 100 historically significant vessels and a world-class collection of Pacific maritime artifacts and documents. Millions of visitors enjoy the park at Hyde Street Pier annually.
The 1886 tall ship Balclutha is a three-mast square-rigger. The 301-foot ship is one of the most iconic and most appreciated features of the park and the San Francisco Fisherman’s Wharf waterfront. The Balclutha is also used for a long-standing and highly-regarded living history program, “The Age of Sail,” that includes overnight stays for hundreds of school children. Balclutha’s onboard carpenter shop exhibit needed a complete restoration to bring it up to the level of historical accuracy reflected in other quarters and workrooms on the ship. The Fund for People in Parks provided a grant to restore the carpenter shop so that visitors can more deeply connect with the rich maritime history. The shop was completed in late 2021 and is now available for all park visitors to experience. Project Cost: $4,044 Project Completed: 2021 One of the most popular questions visitors ask is, 'What was daily life like at sea?' This project gives visitors a better understanding of the trades on a vessel and what daily life was like on a historic sailing ship." |
