San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park is home to over 100 historically significant vessels and a world-class collection of Pacific maritime artifacts and documents. Millions of visitors enjoy a number of the park’s ships and exhibits at Hyde Street Pier annually.

Good visitor orientation often begins with being sure that the visitor can get their bearings. This project produced a cast iron and bronze compass rose that was installed in a very high traffic area of the park: inset into the deck of the Hyde Street Pier.  The 32-inch disc indicates the four prime points of the compass all set around the National Park Service logo. The Fund for People in Parks
provided a grant for design, manufacture, and installation of the compass rose.

The arrowhead compass rose was installed at Hyde Street Pier in March 2019, and orients visitors to the space, place, and historical context of navigation on the open seas.

Project Cost: $6,893                                                                     Project Completed: 2019
