Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park spans across more than 20 sites in the city of Richmond, California, representing stories of resilience, innovation, and diverse experiences. Visitors learn about contributions and sacrifices of ordinary people who supported the war effort from the home front. From shipbuilding to scrap metal collection, and factory work to health care advancements, Rosie the Riveter remains a timeless symbol of empowerment and resilience.

The park's sites are located throughout the city, and are often unmarked, making visitation difficult. The Fund for People in Parks is supporting the design and installation of three marquee signs to create visibility. The three sites, Historic Kaiser Field Hospital, Richmond Fire Station, and Nystrom School, will feature in the soon-to-be completed Richmond Wellness Trail and a park driving tour. QR codes on the signs provide access to historically significant and inclusive storytelling. The signs establish a sense of place for visitors and residents alike.

Funding Needed: $48,335                                                     Project Approved: 2024

Most park sites are in private hands, and although people on the street, as well as park visitors drive or walk by them routinely, their significance isn't obvious without identifying signage. Our challenge is to identify locations scattered throughout the city so that park visitors can explore moments of WWII history, and experience what it meant to live in Richmond during the war."
