The migration to the American West in the nineteenth century brought over 500,000 pioneers on trails over the Rockies and through the Great Basin. Many artifacts from that era have been found within Great Basin National Park, but none in recent history have inspired as much interest as the discovery of an intact Winchester Model 1873 rifle mysteriously left leaning against a tree in the wilderness over 100 years ago.
The Fund for People in Parks provided a grant to create an engaging visitor center display, "The Forgotten Winchester," for the rifle and relate it to the pioneer history of the time in which it was abandoned. Designer Dan DiVittorio adaptively crafted an existing display case to integrate the rifle exhibit into the Baker visitor center so that all visitors have access to the captivating story. The exhibit was installed in May 2019. Project Cost: $32,231 Project Completed: 2019 Amazing display, very interesting!" |
