Fort Vancouver National Historic Site protects a diverse collection of sites and tells a wide variety of important historical stories. In 2020, the park re-wrote its decades-old brochure to include new sites that had been added to the park, give it a modern tone, and better acknowledge the nuances of some of the park's sensitive history.
This project translated the brochure into five other languages: Spanish, Russian, Japanese, French, and German, and made them available online and at the visitor center. This allows the park to better reach out to its diverse visitor base - 24% of students in the local school district are English language learners, and 20% of local residents speak a language other than English at home, primarily Spanish. The park history includes important Russian and Japanese stories that draw visitors from those communities, and German and French visitors to the area are common. Project Cost: $11,904 Project Completed: 2023 The Fund for People in Parks: $10,404 National Park Service: $1,500 We believe that having our most fundamental visitor services publication translated and available is an important step towards inclusivity, and will increase our relevancy to our diverse audience." |
